Winning what you want may cost you everything you love...

As a general’s daughter in a vast empire that revels in war and enslaves those it conquers, seventeen-year-old Kestrel has two choices: she can join the military or get married. But Kestrel has other intentions.

One day, she is startled to find a kindred spirit in a young slave up for auction. Arin’s eyes seem to defy everything and everyone. Following her instinct, Kestrel buys him—with unexpected consequences. It’s not long before she has to hide her growing love for Arin.

But he, too, has a secret, and Kestrel quickly learns that the price she paid for a fellow human is much higher than she ever could have imagined.

Set in a richly imagined new world, The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkoski is a story of deadly games where everything is at stake, and the gamble is whether you will keep your head or lose your heart.

To be honest I wasn't excepting much from this book at first, it was a bit slow with Kestrel being very indecisive and not knowing what to with the rest of her life should she get married or be enlisted in to the military that along with Arin ignorence I felt like it was never gonna end but then in the second half it started to take off with  and I found myself flipping threw the pages not wanting it to end. There were twists and turns things I knew were gonna happen and then thing that happened which I never expected and just left me in awe. I really enjoyed the world building in this story and the rivalry between Valorians and the Herrani and am excited to figure out more about it in the next book and of course catch up with Kestrel and Arin espicially after what happpened at the end of the book which just left me heart broken.

Krestal didn't really appeal to me that much in the beginning as I said before she was indecisive and had trouble making decisions. Along with that she was weak, she let people push her around even Arin and didin't really know how to stand up for herself. But along the way she really began to grow more confidence in herself and we got to see how smart and strategic she  as is it became clear for her what she had to do for herself and her empire.

Arin also didn't have much of an affect on me in the beggining , I didn't really like him. He was just meh there wasn't much and he was just rude. But while progressing through the book and reading more I started admiring him and his strength and willpower. He is very commited to what he believes in doesn't let anything come in the way of it, but along with that we get to see the sweet side of him as well when he is with Astrel.

Their relationship was not insta lovey at all which should deserve a round of aplause. In the begining they didn't really enjoy being in eachothers company and Arin espiecially was detached. But as the story progressed so did their relationship. They started to understand more about eachother and the reasons behind their actions. Their relationship was very complex you could see how each of they has feelings for eachother but they didn't let those feelings get in the way of their loyalty towards their kingdoms in the midst of all war. They are both strong and commited to what they believe in and they know that them being together will not be easy despite how much they like eachother.

Although this book didn't have me from the get go the second half absolutely made up for it with all the action and all of the secrets being revealed. I was hanging on and just couldn't stop reading. Can't wait to pick up the next one!!!

I'd give this book a 4/5 and I highly recommend you go pick it up!!
